Most of It Arrives by Sea

The bow of a container ship stacked high with colourful shipping containers.

Look around the room.

The chair. The phone. The shirt you are wearing.

Most of it arrived by sea, in a steel box, on a ship few of us will ever see.

Shipping is the quietest part of the economy because it works. Nobody notices a container until it is late, and then everybody does.

Behind each delivery are:

  • crews away for months
  • ports running through the night
  • tides that keep their own timetable

The sea does not make headlines when it carries on. It simply carries us.

Perhaps that is well worth a moment’s notice, once in a while.
